Does Grok in my Tesla need Premium Connectivity?

Short answer: It needs Premium Connectivity or a Wi-Fi connection. Tesla's release notes say Grok "Requires Premium Connectivity or a Wi-Fi connection," and there is no offline mode. Without either, Grok won't respond.

Try these, in order

  1. On the road, Grok needs an active Premium Connectivity subscription. Parked at home, Wi-Fi works.
  2. The same applies to "Hey Grok", the steering wheel mic button shortcut, Connectors and Grok Bot.
  3. If Grok stops responding with a good connection, owners point to status.x.ai for outages. We have not confirmed it covers Grok in Tesla.
  4. Touchscreen and steering wheel controls don't depend on Grok.

"Hey Grok" wake word doesn't trigger

Symptom: Nothing happens when you say Hey Grok.

Fix: Turn on voice activation in Controls > Audio > Grok Settings (Tesla's support page; the same settings are also under Grok > Settings). Confirm Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi, and try an American English pronunciation: the 2026.20 release notes said the wake word is trained on American English (later notes we checked do not repeat this). Press and hold the steering wheel mic button to open Grok without the wake word.
