Why does my Tesla tell me to open the Grok app?

Short answer: It means you reached your Grok account's usage limit. Tesla says signed-in cars follow your account limits and prompt you to open the Grok app when you hit them. If you're not signed in, the car asks you to sign in instead.

Try these, in order

  1. Open the Grok app on your phone to see your plan and usage.
  2. On The X Subscription, check Usage at grok.com/dashboard. Grok, Grok Bot and Cursor share one weekly pool.
  3. Not signed in? Sign in from the touchscreen (Grok > Sign In) to use your account's limits.
  4. Touchscreen and steering wheel controls don't depend on Grok.

Worried a shared usage pool will lock you out of Grok in the car

Symptom: You're on The X Subscription and Grok Bot work draws from the same weekly pool as Grok.

Fix: Two official facts: on The X Subscription, Grok, Grok Bot and Cursor draw from one shared weekly pool (SpaceXSI docs), and when a signed-in car hits your account limit, the car prompts you to open the Grok app (Tesla). Neither says whether basic car commands keep working at that point, so we can't confirm either way. Check your pool under Usage at grok.com/dashboard before a long trip. Touchscreen and steering wheel controls do not depend on Grok.

Confidence: medium

Whether in-car voice commands pause when the pool is empty is not documented.
