Do I need a subscription to use Grok in my Tesla?

Short answer: No for basic Grok: it works without a Grok account or subscription, with limited usage. Connectors need any signed-in Grok account. Grok Bot needs a Grok account with SuperGrok.

Try these, in order

Basic Grok chat and car commands: no account needed (usage limited).
Email, calendar and Drive (Connectors): sign in with any Grok account.
Grok Bot errands: SuperGrok on the signed-in account, per Tesla's page.
Grok still needs Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi to work at all.

Grok Bot doesn't show up in the car

Symptom: Grok won't hand tasks to Grok Bot.
